PETALING JAYA: Fireman Muhammad Adib Mohd Kassim, who was severely injured during a fracas at a temple in Subang Jaya last month, has died.
He was 24.
Adib had been receiving treatment at the National Heart Institute (IJN). He died at 9.41pm.
Previously, IJN had said that Adib’s condition had worsened, showing 「progressive deterioration of his lung function」 due to his severe lung injury.
Doctors had decided to reinsert the Veno-Venous ECMO system again at 9pm last night to assist with his breathing.
Adib also required dialysis support as his renal function had not improved.
Last Sunday, it was reported that Adib was still relying on life support machines to allow his internal organs to heal. It was also reported that he remained in critical, but stable condition.
Doctors had also taken Adib off the life support machine for his heart after it was able to function on its own.
Adib was part of the team of firefighters who rushed to USJ25 following a protest over the relocation of the Sri Maha Mariamman temple which saw rioters setting vehicles on fire.
He was dragged out of the Emergency Medical Rescue Services vehicle and was assaulted.
Adib’s remains will be taken to Kedah for burial.
Condolence messages from Malaysians, including from Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad, began to pour in immediately after news broke of Adib’s death.
「I am saddened to hear the news. Condolences to Muhammad Adib’s family,」 he said in a tweet.
Former prime minister Najib Razak also offered his condolences.
Some social media users urged authorities to nab and charge those responsible for Adib’s death.
He was supposed to wed Nurul Najihah Mohd Radzi, 25, on Dec 21.
